Caring for your rug

A handcrafted rug is made to last for years, and a little regular care keeps it looking its best. Here is how to look after yours, with a note for each fibre.

Everyday care

  • Vacuum gently and regularly on a low setting to lift dust, avoiding the fringes.
  • Rotate your rug every few months so it wears and fades evenly.
  • Use a rug pad underneath to reduce slipping, add cushioning and protect the pile.
  • Keep it out of long spells of direct sunlight, which can fade colours over time.
  • Light shedding is normal with new wool rugs and settles over the first few weeks.

Spills and stains

  • Act quickly. Blot the spill gently with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside in. Do not rub, as that pushes it deeper.
  • Avoid soaking the rug. Use as little water as possible.
  • For a stain that will not lift, or for spills on silk and viscose, speak to a professional rug cleaner rather than scrubbing.

A note on each fibre

Wool

Naturally durable and stain-resistant. Vacuum regularly, blot spills, and have it professionally cleaned every year or two.

Jute

A natural plant fibre that prefers to stay dry. Keep it away from damp areas, vacuum gently, and spot-clean with a dry cloth. Blot spills at once and never soak it.

Viscose

Soft and silky, but sensitive to water, which can mark it. Blot gently, avoid wet cleaning, and leave deeper cleaning to a professional.

Silk

Delicate and luxurious. Vacuum on a gentle setting, keep it out of direct sun, and use a professional cleaner for any stain.

Cotton

Easy to live with. Vacuum regularly and blot spills. Check the product details, as some flatweave cotton pieces can be gently washed.
